Position: Member of the Board What sustainability means to me.
Merriam-Webster: Sustainability, 1: capable of being sustained 2: or, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged. The most popular definition of sustainability (from the 1987 UN conference): "Meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." -Robert Gillman, editor of the In Context magazine I've always had trouble completely understanding the word sustainable. The issue I have with the word is, (I believe) that there never can be a completely sustainable world. I find it impossible for our species to live the way we've have had and not deplete a natural resources. Looking far into the definition of the word, one can relate it down to Darwinism. An estimated 99.9% of all species on our planet have been extincted. (Source: Guns, Germs, and Steel By Jared Diamond) This world, obviously, by far, isn't a sustainable one. However, with the growing awareness of our impact on our planet, a solution of being sustainable (as much as possible) is necessary for pursuing the things we need and want. Not to mention, it's necessary for everything that will be living here after you and I have lived our lives.
