The summer of love rides into July as we celebrate our interdependence with all the great people of Austin. Join the folks of the SHIRE at LoveATX Interdependence Fest this Sunday at the AMP (Austin Art + Music Partnership) warehouse in South Austin. We'll be setting up our tipi--the latest SHIRE natural building project, decorated by the eighth grade class of KIPP: Austin at this spring's field trip--talking shop about sustainability, education, and all the amazing work happening in Austin.
We're excited to share space with so many empowered people and organizations: Sustainable Food Center, Go Local Austin, Community Cultivators, EcoSteve, and so many more. As Americans on July 4th, we come together to celebrate our nation's day of independence. We drink. We dance. We laugh. We blow stuff up. Yet how often do we acknowledge our dependence on this land and its resources? We depend on so much. On the sun, the wind, the rain, the soil, our neighbors, our communities. As they support us, we must support them and devote ourselves to the productive interdependence of our Earth and all her people. Check it out on Facebook and join the party. We hope to see you there. For all you guerilla gardeners out there, attend Andy Howell's workshop on growing your own microgreens. And don't forget to see Theron Beaudreau and the Community Cultivators' aquaponics system. Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being. Without interrelation with society he cannot realize his oneness with the universe or suppress his egotism. His social interdependence enables him to test his faith and to prove himself on the touchstone of reality. --Mohandas Gandhi Last update: June 30, 2011 06:45 pm
