We’re ready. Ready to overcome fear. Ready to dismiss the fanatic and hateful. Ready to speak out against corporate campaigns and special interest government. Ready to define our country based upon what we do, not by what we’re told. We’re ready to rally.
On October 30, I’ll be rallying in support of Jon Stewart, telling our politicians and their corporate puppeteers to take it down a notch, for America, because we are not buying it. We can see through the lies of the war on terror. We don’t believe the propaganda of cable news. We have lived through the decade of 9/11, the credit and housing bubble, and ten years without net job growth, and still, despite all of this corruption, we are ready to laugh. We choose to imbibe the ambrosia of our great satyrist as a means to remediate the snake oil of corporate kings because we feel the disconnection between what we are told and what we experience. There’s a war on terror going on, not because a handful of people acted out their hatred of U.S. policy, but because our government and its media henchmen wanted to make money vamping up the war machine and win elections. This war is waged all over the world, yet its only victory occurs here at home when Americans become afraid and irrational and project that fear back out into the world, muddying our political discourse and distracting us from the work that needs to be done. And still, we are ready to laugh. We need to laugh. We turn to Stewart and that other guy because laughter is how we will overcome fear. Laughter is our sword and shield. It enables us to see fear for what it is: uncertainty. Laughing reminds us that our daily lives have very little resemblance to what we see on TV and the web. It empowers us to not longer be afraid, to live the life we want to lead, free from the threats of lawyers, guns, and money. The Rally to Restore Sanity has the potential to be the defining moment of our generation. It can become whatever we choose, but laughter will not be enough. And if this becomes just another party to create an exciting week of television, fear will keep marching on. Begin today. Organize, mobilize, work. And laugh. Key words: rally to restore sanity, laugh, laughing, laughter, media Last update: September 30, 2010 09:13 am
